TEETHING TIME

Most babies get their first tooth between 4 and 7 months old. Teething is often a painful and difficult experience for many babies. Parents can become frustrated while attempting to alleviate the pain and discomfort their child feels. There are many methods and products available to help with the teething process.

Chewing on a slightly frozen washcloth is effective for some babies that experience discomfort. Teething rings can also work, just be sure there is no liquid inside in case it would break. If you are using a frozen washcloth or teething ring, it should be only slightly hard so it doesn’t cause damage to the child’s gums.

Sometimes simply massaging your baby’s gums with a clean figure is enough to alleviate pain or discomfort. If it seems like your baby is in a significant amount of pain, ask your doctor if you can give them a dose of acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Do not give your child aspirin.

The FDA has issued warnings against teething gels that contain benzocaine or lidocaine. If used improperly, they can potentially be harmful to your baby. If too much is swallowed, it can numb the child’s throat temporarily. If a large concentration of benzocaine or lidocaine builds up in the body, it can be toxic.

Amber necklaces are a more recent trend in alleviating the painful teething symptoms. Amber is a fossilized natural resin that contains succinic acid. It is believed that succinic acid has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects when it is in direct contact with the baby’s skin.
